Maa te maramata o mahara koe ka mau roa’

Kiingi Tuheitia and the Whare Ariki extend their deepest sympathies to the sons, mokopuna and whaanau of one of Maaoridoms strongest advocates and staunch supporters of Kiingitanga.

parekuraHe will be sadly missed and dearly remembered, Kiingi Tuheitia said today.

As a former Chair of the Maaori Affairs Select Committee, and as one of the modern eras longest serving Minister of Maaori Affairs, Parekura Horomia was a tireless and constant supporter of Maaori aspirations for tino rangatiratanga.

From the time of the passing of the Maaori Queen right up until the present time, Parekura has been a quiet confidante and source of strength to Kiingi Tuheitia.

He played a pivotal role during the negotiations around the Waikato River (Raupatu) Settlement and had a very strong sense of the desired outcome for those negotiations, said Kiingi Tuheitia.

I will always remember his passion, his dedication, his commitment and his sense of humour.

He did so much for Maaori over his lifetime and I am sure his legacy will endure for generations to come.

Kiingi Tuheitia will lead a contingent from Waikato-Tainui to the tangi at Hauiti Marae at Tolaga Bay on Wednesday.
