Te Hamua Nikora puts his hand up for Ikaroa Rawhiti

2 min read

TeHamuaIt’s official, Te Hamua Nikora is running as a Mana Candidate for the upcoming Ikaroa Rawhiti by-election.

He will join the likes of Shane Taurima (so we’ve heard) and Meka Whaitiri both for Labour and Te Rangihau Gilbert for the Maori Party.

Mr Nikora affiliates to Ngati Porou, Te Whakatohea, Ngati Konohi, Ngai Tai and Waikato.

But there is still the nomination process to go through with Leon Hawea expressing his interest in running.

It won’t be business as usual if Te Hamua gets in and we suspect that is exactly what many people on the ground will be looking for, someone who connects and reflects the people of Ikaroa Rawhiti rather then the typical stuffy, old political/corporate type.

“This self belief, bred of HAATI whanau, hapu and iwi role-modelling” has left Te Hamua an excellent candidate and one that would bring a breath of fresh air to what can often be dull, stuffy and at times boring Parliamentary halls.

He’s also a singer/song writer, guitarist and music producer and an inspirational and heartfelt speaker. Te Hamua has been currently speaking to schools around the country bringing his brilliantly funny brand of inspiration to tamariki and rangatahi.

Te Hamua’s philosophy is that “laughter can heal anything… Add a Maori flavour to that and the sky is the limit!”

Music has been a huge part of Te Hamua’s life since he was a small child. From singing in the church band, to gracing the stage with the Whangara kapa haka group or his band TOHU, to fronting the television hit “Homai Te Pakipaki”.

Music, the stage and television are the perfect vehicles for me to get my thoughts and whakapono out there… ko te waiata me te puoro tetahi reo e mohiotia ana e te ao whanui, ahakoa no hea te tangata.”

Might need to add Member of Parliament to that garage brother!

President of MANA, Annette Sykes released the following statement:

“I am humbled that two such outstanding nominees have chosen to contest the MANA candidacy. Te Hamua Nikora (Ngati Porou, Te Whakatohea, Ngai Tai, Ngati Konohi and Waikato) has enjoyed an illustrious career in Maori broadcasting and is most well-known as the iconic presenter for the Maori programmes Pukana, Kai Time on the Road and Homai Te Pakipaki. Leon Hawea (Ngati Kahungunu, Te Whatuiapiti and Rongomaiwahine) has spent his lifetime as an advocate for his people in such roles as the Iwi Liaison Officer for the Hastings District Council and in his current employment as the District Manager for Te Kohanga Reo.

Selection Committee Details

  • Selection hui have been organised in Gisborne (Saturday 18th May), Hastings (Sunday 19th May) and Wainuiomata (Monday 20th May) and the announcement of the successful candidate will be made on Thursday 23rd May.

Candidate nominations must be with the Electoral Commission by midday on June 5.

  1. Mean Maori HAATI-NGATI! Absolutely karakia for you Te Hamua. Ae you are exactly what our people need. You have the ability to grasp the attention of our rangatahi, and get them excited about moving our Waka up the Awa. Our rangatahi are connected and attracted to your “Tu Tika Tu Pono” passion for Tangata Whenua. Makes me feel like moving up the coast just to vote for you. No offence to Leon, I have known him through TKR, but it was nicely said in the article. Te Hamua will be a breathe of fresh air to stuffy old boring politics. Thank you Te Hamua, Mauri Ora….AMEN

  2. All the best Te Hamua
