Business, law & youth urged to nominate now for 2013 Human Rights Awards

Media company Foxtel and food manufacturer Luv-A-Duck are two wildly different businesses. Yet both were shortlisted for an Australian Human Rights Award last year, recognising their support for diversity in the workplace.

This year, large and small businesses are again urged tonominate onlinefor the Human Rights Business Award, to be presented on 10 December 2013 as part of the Australian Human Rights Commissions annual Human Rights Awards.

Young people are also encouraged to nominate online for the 2013 the Young Persons Human Rights Medal.

Legal professionals, law firms and legal aid workers are similarly urged to nominate now for the 2013 Human Rights Law Award.

The Australian Human Rights Awards are a unique opportunity to celebrate the work of individuals and organisations who contribute to human rights in Australia, said Commission president, Professor Gillian Triggs.

There are ten award categories, including the Business Award, Young Persons Human Rights Medal, and Law Award.

Other award categories include TV, radio, and print media; non-fiction literature; community individual and community organisation; and the Human Rights Medal.

Past winners of the Human Rights Medal, awarded in recognition of an outstanding contribution to human rights in this country,include Ian Thorpe, Thrse Rein and Eddie Mabo.

The nomination deadline for the 2013 Australian Human Rights Awards has been extended. Nominationsnow close on 27 September 2013.
