Conservation Boards Review – invitation to hui

Tena koe

133320-2052-7You may be aware that the Department of Conservation has recently completed a round of major restructuring. This has seen the introduction of a new partnership-based approach to working with communities and businesses to achieve greater conservation outcomes. Conservation boards, which assist the Department with developing, implementing and monitoring conservation policy, were not included in this re-structuring.

In view of the significant changes in conservancies and the introduction of the new partnerships model, a review of the role, functions and boundaries of conservation boards is now required. To this end, the Minister of Conservation has appointed a review panel to develop and consult on options for the future of conservation boards, and to provide recommendations on the most appropriate option by the end of November this year.

The Minister has appointed me to chair the Panel in my capacity as Parliamentary Private Secretary for Conservation. The Panel consists of:

  • Waana Davis, North Island iwi representative
  • Sandra Cook, Ngai Tahu iwi representative
  • Bob Dickinson, Nelson Marlborough Conservation Board
  • Hugh Logan, former Director-General of Conservation
  • Michael Fitchett, recreation/tourism sector representative.

I would like to invite you to participate in a hui in your region to discuss the future of conservation boards. To stimulate the discussion, I have attached a summary of the terms of reference for the conservation boards review.

The hui will be held in the morning from10AM to 12PMat:

City Date
Christchurch 30 September 2013
Nelson 1 October 2013
Rotorua 4 October 2013
Wellington 14 October 2013
Auckland 21 October 2013

If you are likely to attend, we would appreciate it if you could let us know as soon as possible. We will send details of the venues for the hui when these are confirmed

We are also developing a questionnaire which we will send out to interested individuals and organisations shortly. If you would like a copy of the questionnaire, please let us know and we will forward a copy to you as soon as it is completed.

Please respond to this email address ([email protected])or contact Andrew Harbidge on (04) 471 3199.

I look forward to meeting you and discussing the future of conservation boards at the hui.

Nga mihi
