Filmmakers Tim Worrall and Aaron Smart intend to make a short documentary that speaks to the mana of their iwi, Ngai Tuhoe, in a lighthearted and joyful way through the performance of an old Waimana party song “Te Rori ki Whakarae” -“The Road to Whakarae”.

Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 9.32.29 amTheir plan is to film whanau who live on the dusty, winding road to Whakarae as they each sing a different part of the waiata.

The lyrics of Te Rori kiWhakarae, e tell how the unsealed road is a crucial part of Whakaraes mana that could be lost if it were to be sealed and straightened.

Echoing the words of the song, the filmed performances will honour the simple lifestyle and closeness of whanau who have stayed on Tuhoe’s traditionallands to keep the home fires burning for the rest of the iwi.
