Matariki and Maori Language Week at Unitec

Matariki-web-hero-banner.jpg-821x405[1]Unitec Institute of Technology will be hosting a range of events over the next few weeks celebrating Matariki and Maori Language Week.

All the activities have a strong local connection to the whakapapa of UNITEC as an institution. Our Matariki celebrations focus on Te Wai Unuroa o Wairaka and maintaining the mauri and mana of our puna at our Owairaka (Mt Albert) campus.

For Maori Language Week we’re encouraging our staff, students and local businesses from our Waitakere campus to put the macron back into Waitakere.

Scheduled Events

Matariki Symposium

10am – 12.30pm, Thursday 10 July

Te Noho Kotahitanga Marae

Unitec, Gate 3, Mt Albert

Kaumatua Haare Williams talks about the knowledge passed on from his tipuna around the puna, its significance to Te Noho Kotahitanga marae and surrounding areas.

Dr John Perrott, Senior Lecturer at Unitec’s Department of Natural Sciences, and Matauranga Maori Advisor discusses the implications of Maori alienation from water and how a misuse of our resources has led to land sickness.

Cleaning up the Puna

8am – 1pm, Friday 11 July

Unitec, Gate 3, Carrington Road, Mt Albert

Following on from the symposium, Dr John Perrottt will lead our staff, students and community with a clean-up of the puna that brings together Western science with the Maori concept of Kaitiakitanga in a new conservation method.

An audience with Rob Ruha

4.00pm – 5.30pm, Thursday 21 July

Rob Ruha will be performing waiata from hisdebut EP, Tiki Tapu and sharing his whakaaro and experiences with the audience in a question and answer session.

Maori Language Week with Mac and Ron

We’re celebrating Maori Language Week with a drive to encourage local businesses and the community to put the macron back into Waitakere. Our two characters Mac and Ron will be visiting local business and running a quiz and kai for the community from our Waitakere campus library.
