Te Ohu Rata O Aotearoa – Maori Medical Practitioners Association (Te ORA) wins Nga Kupu Ora Award 2014

Te ORA is thrilled to win the Te Haurongo (biography and history) category at this years Nga Kupu Ora (Aotearoa Maori Book) Awards with their published book, Te Paruhi a nga Takuta. Te Paruhi a nga Takuta tells the story of 27 Maori doctors and students. Some just starting their careers, other reflecting on decades of service, sacrifice and experience.

Collectively, these stories span the history of Te Ohu Rata o Aotearoa (Te ORA), from trailblazing early Maori GPs to the latest generation of Maori health professionals and learners. It covers many aspects of medicine and a huge range of careers from hospital wards to the halls of academia, from Te Kaha to Afghanistan from urban medical centres to Marae-based rural providers.

takutaThese stories share a real sense of adventure, adversity, drive, self-discovery, innovation and whanau ora. Many of the people in this book have challenged New Zealands health system and influenced the provision of health services to Maori whanau and communities for the better. Their stories highlight the pivotal role Te Ao Maori plays in improving health outcomes for Maori whanau.

This book also carries a message of great promise and purpose. Over many years, the efforts of Te ORA and its Maori doctors and students have made a telling contribution to the health of wh?nau and communities throughout Aotearoa / New Zealand.

Te ORA and the membership are absolutely thrilled that Te Paruhi has won the Te Haurongo category of this years Nga Kupu Ora Awards says Dr Rawiri Jansen (Te ORA Chair). Te ORAs vision was that Te Paruhi inspires the next generation of Maori doctors and their whanau and tells the diverse stories of some of our leading Maori medical practitioners.
