Casting Call for a new TV show: Pacific Voyagers Aotearoa

2 min read

A ten-part adventure that follows the transformation of three rangatahi as they vie for a place on board a fleet of voyaging canoes sailing to the South Pacific.

Zoomslide TV Production Company are casting for a new prime time show for Maori Television.

This is a factual programme filmed over two months around the north island of Aotearoa. The rangatahi will be sailing in waka moana Haunui and working alongside voyaging expert and kaitiaki of Haunui, Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr.

Over six weeks they will circumnavigate the North Island landing at significant sites in Polynesian history and exploring the voyaging brilliance of their ancestors. At the end of these six weeks one of the rangatahi will be selected to join elite Pacific voyagers in their blue water sail to The Cook Islands.

Casting Brief

  • Three young people aged 18-26
  • Mix of ages/sexes
  • Maori
  • No sailing experience needed we would prefer people who have not yet sailed on waka moana.

General Requirements

  • Must be able to swim well.
  • Must have a valid passport until the end of 2015 and visas (if necessary) for The Cook Islands
  • Must be comfortable being on the sea.
  • Must have a basic level of fitness.
  • If chosen they must be available to sail to the Cook Islands at the end of the NZ shoot departing mid to late April.

These rangatahi must be prepared to be on camera as they are challenged to become Pacific Voyagers. It will be an intensive shoot in a variety of weather conditions and will be physically demanding. The series follows their journey so they must have a willingness to share their mahi- good times and bad. Sailing involves living in very close quarters with a crew. There is little privacy and little time out. Sailing is also about team-work and pulling your weight so it is important that the rangatahi are up for this.

Time Requirements

  • Must be available the following dates and times.
  • 30 January 1st February in Auckland for a wananga all must attend
  • Available the week of 9th February in Auckland for an overnight sail on Haunui.
  • 3 March to mid May sail around the north island. ***
  • 13 April available to sail to the Cook Islands (allow 2-3 weeks) ***
  • ***No other commitments will be possible as they will be sailing that entire time.

If successful as one of the 20 rangatahi to attend the wananga, we expect them to organise their own transport to and from the wananga. All costs duringtheir time at the wananga including meals and accommodations will be arranged and provided by Zoomslide.

Zoomslideare looking for three rangatahi. Not all of them need to speak te reo. But an interest in this is a pre-requisite.
